Yasawa

Yasawa
Yasawa

This is a group of 12 big islands and dozens of smaller ones which form a line of about 80 kilometres in the north of the Mamanucas. The scenery is simple and striking: paradise virgin beaches in quiet fishing villages that have not yet been reached by tourist development.

There are also various villages surrounded by beautiful lagoons of volcanic origin, which are responsible for Yasawa´s international reputation, as it was there where the two versions of the film “The Blue Lagoon” were shot. Considering this amazing landscape, it is easy to understand why Yasawa is among the best beaches in Fiji.

Hotels & Activities

You should take into account that the resorts are isolated, most villages have no electricity or running water and there are few facilities. These resorts are run by friendly islanders, which enables you to get in touch with real life on the island.

Even though cruisers have come since the 1950´s, accommodation was only possible in the late 80´s, since before that it was forbidden by Fiji´s government. For years and years, Yasawa was just a paradise for adventurers and explorers which dared to come by boat. In 2003 a service of ferries was set up and this marked the beginning of classical tourism. However, Yasawa´s natural charm is still intact, offering to its visitors some of the best beaches in the world.

Watching sunset or sunrise from the top of Wayalailai is an amazing experience which you cannot miss if you visit Yasawa. Another fantastic choice is visiting the real Blue Lagoon, for which you need to go to the extremely expensive resort Turtle Island on the private island called Nanuya Leru. There are also 3-7 night cruisers that enable you to visit traditional villages, remote beaches and lagoons while you enjoy the greatest comfort.

Apart from the natural beauty in Yasawa, you can also see some of the local churches in the fishing villages where you will be able to listen to the islanders´ tuneful religious chants.

Flights

To get to Yasawa you can travel for 4 hours by catamaran from Lautoka or by hydroplane, which takes just 20 minutes. Any time is good to visit Fiji and Yasawa is not an exception, as the weather is usually dry and hot.
