In 1524, Taboga became the first Spanish port for Panama City, and through it the Spanish sent all the Incas treasures to Madrid. As a result, Taboga was later the aim of famous pirates until the French efforts to build the famous canal brought some prosperity, attracting, for example the artist Paul Gauguin who came to live on the island.

Since then, the coasts of Taboga have been favourite to Panamanians, who come to spend the weekends because despite its nearness to Panama City, Taboga is a typical Caribbean destination, where there are no cars and the architecture is completely colonial. Surrounding Taboga´s beaches, there are gardens with orchids and roses, oranges, apples and pineapples.
