Saona

To the South of the Dominican Republic, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea, we find Saona, with its white sand curved beaches surrounded by idyllic palm trees, a spot that lovers of coastal tourism cannot miss.

With 300 inhabitants, Saona has only two small settlements on a surface of 25 by 5 kilometres: Punta Gorda and Mano Juan. The rest is a National Park and Marine Reserve and there are only a few areas in some small resorts where you will be able to enjoy the fabulous Saona beaches, usually empty, ideal for relaxing and resting in total harmony with nature.

Where to stay and what to do

There are very few places to stay in Saona, and they are extremely exclusive, so it is a good idea to book in advance if you are planning to sleep on the island.

Diving and snorkelling among corals to see dolphins and cowfish, is one of the reasons why visitors come to Saona.

Exploring the Flamingo Lagoon in the Southeast of the island, or Cotubanama Cave ( where the aboriginal indian chief hid from the Spaniards), are highly recommended activities. Or you can try the Natural Pool for the best swimming in the Caribbean. Arriving in Samoa by boat, catamaran or yacht, past the Catuano Path in the middle of the cliffs, with a view of the island in the horizon, is also outstanding.

When and how to go

You can get there by catamaran from Bayahibe or the Dominican Republic.

The best months to visit Saona are from November to June.
