Being the smallest of the Netherlands Antilles, Saba is actually the cone of an extinct volcano that rises 850 metres above sea level. The volcanoīs peak, Mount Scenery, is in fact the highest point in the Netherlands kingdom. Although is is Dutch, its official language is English.
Saba beaches are undoubtedly among the best beaches of the Caribbean. A former shelter for famous pirates like Hiram Breakes, they are now a magnet attracting more and more tourists who come to enjoy its mild water and magical environment.
WHERE TO STAY AND WHAT TO DO
There are only a few hotels in Saba so it is a good idea to stay in one of the small inns or bed and breakfast places that the islanders have to offer.
Diving is the favourite activity in Saba, since the remains of the volcano offer amazing underwater landscapes and a profuse sea life, and you may be lucky enough to sea sharks.
Saba has 1359 inhabitants, and visiting the quiet ancient villages to meet these friendly people is really interesting.
As a souvernir you will be offered Saba Spice, which is local rum mixed with Canadian rum , a mixture resulting in a unique flavour.
On the island there are 4 villages that are worth visiting: Hellīs Gate, Windwardside, Saint John and The Bottom, where you will appreciate the contrast between the red roofs of the houses and the green colour of the thick vegetation that surrounds them.
WHEN AND HOW TO GO
You can get to Saba by boat of plane from the nearby Saint Martin.
The best time to visit the island is from September to February.
