ROSARIO ISLANDS - COLOMBIA
COLOMBIA BEACHES

The 23 islands, islets and cays of Rosrio National Park are geologic formations which date back 5000 years ago when the sea level fell dramatically revealing areas with coral reefs. Eventually, the islands evolved into three different ecosystems: the coastal lagoons, the mangroves which surround them and the tropical jungles inside. It is because of this spectacular environment that Rosario Islands are among the best world beaches.
Apart from this striking ecosystem relationship, Rosario Islands have one of the most important coral reefs in the Caribbean Sea, so diving, snorkelling and swimming are usual activities, although you need a guided visit to the most beautiful natural paradise to watch giant turtles, dolphins, seahorses and occasional sharks.
WHERE TO STAY AND WHAT TO DO - HOTELS AND ACTIVITIES
We recommend you to stay in Cartagena, where you will find a wide range of places to stay, and then go on a day trip to visit Rosario Islands.
If you cannot face diving, you can try the aquarium with more than 1300 species of native plants and animals.
You can also visit the Spanish fortifications on Boca Chica island, which date back to the 17th century and were built to protect Cartagena from pirates and buccaneers. Take advantage of the spectacular coasts on this small island which is one of the liveliest beaches in Colombia.
You can also go camping in one of the small cays, which can be a really enjoyable experience, but first you need a special permit from the Park authorities.
HOW AND WHEN TO GO - WEATHER AND TRANSPORTATION
You can take a water taxi at Bodeguita Quay in the walled city in the centre of Cartagena.
Any time of year is good to visit Rosario Islands, since the weather is always warm.
