  • PUNTA DEL ESTE - URUGUAYPunta del Este is a peninsula on the southeastern city of the Maldonado department, in the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. It is a narrow strip of land dividing the waters of the Rio de la Plata and the Atlantic Ocean. To the northeast, it covers the beaches that are between La Barra and Jose Ignacio; and to the southeast, Punta Ballena, Portezuelo and Solanas.

    The geographic location of Punta del Este makes it one of the main beaches of South America by offering an unbeatable range of beaches on its two totally different types of coasts.

    In Punta del Este, you can choose the type of beach you prefer if you wish to rest or practice water sports. All of them offer crystal clear waters, some peaceful and others with very high and rough waves, depending on the side of the Coast: the Brava or the Mansa, there are areas with fine white sand, or coarse golden sand and they all have a large infrastructure for tourist services.

    Punta also has wonderful lakes such as Laguna del Sauce, del Diario, Blanca, Jose Ignacio and Garzon, for water sports as well as fishing and hunting.

    WHERE TO STAY AND WHAT TO DO - HOTELS AND ACTIVITIES

    Accomodations in Punta del Este range from camping and hostels to the largest international hotels with casinos, large spa, and a large amount of rental houses and apartments. In any case, the reservation must be made with time as the place is usually packed in the summer.

    Among the best beaches around Punta del Este are Portezuelo, Jose Ignacio, Chihuahua, Solanas, Punta Ballena, Las Grutas, Manantiales, La Barra and Laguna del Sauce.

    Among the most popular beaches are Playa Mansa, which extends from the neck of the peninsula to stop 24, where are countless inns along its coast, with calm waters with variable depth and gravel. It has a fishing club and a beautiful wooden bridge over the beach where you can enjoy the landscape of the view of the bay, the island and the Peninsula Gorriti. Fishing for kingfish is commonly done in this area.

    Brava beach is the best known and frequented by lovers of water sports as their big-waves allow surfers to enjoy their activity.     For lovers of water sports the beach El Chileno has coarse sands and structures for whale watching in the lagoon in front of El Diario, tourists enjoy windsurfing, fishing and other activities. The beach El Emir is also the fascination for athletes throughout the year as is quite popular for surfers.

    Punta del Este has endless attractions throughout the peninsula, its incredible beaches, boat trips to the islands of Lobos and Gorriti, parks, museums, ecological tours, tour sea farms and mountains, historic sites, etc.. Its wide avenues and boulevards, its huge buildings, luxurious homes and beautiful gardens, make the entire landscape a feast for the eyes. The main street is the Avenida Gorlero, this avenue is the backbone around which develops a very important business, where malls are offering the best global brands, restaurants. cinemas, bars, casinos, etc.

    Taking the Panoramic Route which has an insurmountable landscape formed by the Maldonado Bay and Portezuelo is Punta Ballena and the Sierra de la Ballena, 15 kilometers away from Punta del Este, a major attraction is the Lussich Park, with its two hectares, considered the seventh global forest reserve and the largest in South America. The area has other attractions like Casapueblo, the art atelier of the Uruguayan artist Carlos Paez Vilaro.

    Also frequent are boat rides to Isla Gorriti and Isla de Lobos. 12 miles away from the coast is the island of Lobos, with 41 acres of rocky surface and one can observe the largest colony of sea lions in South America and the Gorriti Island with 21 acres is visited constantly by tourists who enjoy its two beaches, Puerto Jardín and Playa Honda.

    The port of Punta del Este is considered the best on the beaches of Uruguay and one of the best ports in the beaches of South America is very popular with tourists because it is surrounded by pubs, restaurants and places that offer seafood, today is a tourist port with a large capacity exclusively of moorings and buoys. Another attraction is the Lighthouse of Punta del Este, which was built in 1860 to guide mariners.

    Hundreds of pubs, bars and nightclubs are ready to welcome groups of all ages to enjoy the best of the summer move.

    HOW AND WHEN TO GO - WEATHER AND TRANSPORTATION

    You can arrive by air, both through the Carrasco International Airport or the Punta del Este Airport, by sea across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires, and from Montevideo by land through the Ruta Interbalnearia to Punta del Este.

    The weather in Punta del Este is subtropical in the summer with 30 degrees or hotter. In the winter, 10 degrees or less.
