  • PIRIAPOLIS - URUGUAYPiriapolis is located in the department of Maldonado in Uruguay, at the foot of Cerro San Antonio, on kilometer 98 of route 10. It is a quiet town, with hills and beaches on both sides of the port area and an extensive and varied vegetation. It extends over 25 kilometers of coastline, offering an impressive array of beaches, with calm and rough waters, all absolutely clear, which both relaxing and water sports inviting you to enjoy yourself.

    Piriapolis enjoys a picturesque sight as it is surrounded by beautiful hills, such as Cerro San Antonio, Cerro del Toro and Cerro Pan de Azucar, which give the feeling that they will dive into the sea and from above you can enjoy the beautiful views of this resort.

    The most popular and crowded beach is the Piriápolis center, with nearby shopping offerings and the possibility of various sport activities like jet skiing, water skiing, wind surfing, or practice on the sand the classic Rio de la Plata "picado" soccer variation, a characteristic activity of the beaches of Uruguay.

    WHERE TO STAY AND WHAT TO DO - HOTELS AND ACTIVITIES

    The range of possibilities to stay that offers Piriapolis is varied and complete, and usually has lower prices than nearby Punta del Este, reserved for more expensive and luxurious hotels. In Piriapolis you will find everything from large hotels with casino and resort, thermal water swimming pools to apart-hotels, cabins and organized campings located at various points.

    At the top of Cerro San Antonio, there is a chapel to visit and it can be reached by both road and chairlift from there you can enjoy a panoramic view. Is that the beaches, hills, forests and tourism infrastructure, both in restaurants, bars, hotels and the great nightlife of Piriapolis with all the attractions for the large influx of tourists who frequent it every year.

    The center of the city is the Rambla de los Argentinos, a coastal avenue that invites you for a beautiful walk on a boardwalk that has preserved its originality, and is named that way because of the many Argentine tourists visiting Piriapolis to escape the bustle of the beaches of Argentina.

    Piriápolis is actually the most important urban center with an area of 25 kilometers of beautiful beaches and resorts where you will discover different styles, where some streams separate the different areas. For example, among the Solis Grande and the Espina stream there is an extensive beach, beach Solis, or crossing the Espina stream, Bella Vista offers a beautiful view of mountains and sea, with great peace and tranquility to its visitors, and is a major fishing area, famous its black seabass.

    Crossing the Arroyo Las Flores, one reaches the Balneario Las Flores, one of the oldest and most picturesque, after crossing the stream Tarariras, there's a very busy resort, Playa Verde, where old houses are mixed with modern buildings set in lush trees. Here the beach "De Los Lamas" is very popular among fishing enthusiasts, it's like a little cove, which allows the practice of diving and spearfishing.

    About 3 kilometers from downtown Piriapolis begins to approach the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, that's where San Francisco beach is located where much surfing and fishing is practiced. Two unmisseable places are Punta Colorada (Red Point), one of the most picturesque beaches in the area and Punta Negra, which is about 10 kilometers away from Piriapolis, where beaches are mostly untouched.

    Also known as the "Beach town on the hills", you can enjoy an endless array of ecological tours, as well as walks along nature trails with a great variety of flora.

    Essential visits are to the Piria Castle which was built in 1897, inspired by a model of the Italian Riviera, the Cerro del Toro, horse riding up the Cerro del Indio, climbing the Cerro de San Antonio and at night enjoying the casino, restaurants, pubs, etc.

    HOW AND WHEN TO GO - WEATHER AND TRANSPORTATION

    In terms of access, there are flights to the Carrasco International Airport in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo, from all continents. From there in less than an hour on the excellent Interbalnearia Route you will get to Piriapolis, whether going on the buses departing from the airport as by car. There are tolls on the way, so if you're travelling in a rental car, bring local currency.

    The ideal time to go is from late November to March because the average temperature is 28 degrees.
