Mykonos is a small island visited every year by millions of tourists, being the most active one of the Greek islands. For this reason, it's the most popular and expensive place in Greece. Part of the Cycladas Islands, Mykonos has approximately 85 square kilometers with a granitic ground. Greek mythology tells that Zeus fought several battles in Mykonos.

Most of the beaches on the south coast are protected from the wind and have beautiful sands. Ornos is a great and very crowded beach, because despite the amounts of people who gather there it has a great beauty. The beaches that are close to the island capital are the most visited, therefore they are the most famous beaches of Greece.

There are two quite different beaches with well defined visitors, one of them is Paradise, for nudists, and the other one is Superparadise, for gays. Among the most beautiful beaches are, with no doubt, Psarou and Plati Yalos.

Hotels & Activities

Mykonos' infrastructure for tourist accomodations covers almost every way of offering good service, so from marvelous hotels to hostals, from camping to B&Bs, from apart-hotels to apartments, you can choose according to your budget.

Mykonos offers such variety to choose the type of beach you're looking for. For instance, if you're searching for peace and tranquility, going from the port to the north by car or autobus you can visit the Stephanos beach, which is surrounded by an excellent infrastructure. In this area, you can also find the beautiful Houlakia and Kalafati beaches, with crystal clear waters and is very peaceful.

One of the preferred activities is to roam around its capital city, because its streets are maze-like and it offers a picturesque landscape with its white houses with narrow passes surrounded by an active nightlife. In the lower part there's an area known as Little Venice of Mykonos, which is the most picturesque part, because its houses appear to be built over the sea, and many of them have been transformed into the best places to share a drink.

To visit the Paraportiani Church is unavoidable, because this is the most important church on the island. There you'll find the windmills and the Pelican Hotel, which are the symbols of this island.

Weather & Flights

There are frequent flights from Athens to this island, which has its own airport 4 kilometers from town. The ferry comes daily and it's less expensive. Although it takes around seven hours, this trip is a nice one by itself, very enjoyable on a clear summer day. The island can be reached by hydrofoil as well, it takes about four hours leaving from Rafina, which is approximately 40 kilometers from Athens. The election depends on your budget, if you choose this last choice, you'll pay half the price of an airplane ride. It's easy to visit other islands from there, because it's connected by daily cruises to Pireus and most of the other islands on the Aegean Sea. It's very close to Delos, which has great attraction due to its archeological treasures.

From June to August, the Greek summer is hot and dry, the best time to visit this island may be the spring months, from April to June, or during the autumn, from September to October. With the exception of the winter months, from November to March, the rest of the year Mykonos is full of tourists.
