In one of the most attractive places on the Turkish coast is the beautiful island of Kekova, with a surface of only 4.5 km2.
Situated on a bay near mainland , the island is uninhabited and in the north it holds the ruins of the ancient Apollonia, which dates back to the 5th century BC and attracts thousands of tourists every year, who come to see the impressive partially submerged ruins of the city, which make it stand out among other beaches in Turkey. In fact, the city was submerged by the action of a series of successive earthquakes over the centuries. Marble columns rise from the sea and stone stairs allow you to go down into the depth of the sea.
These ruins can be explored by kayak or ferry, but swimming has been recently forbidden in order to preserve the environment. To the east, on the coast of Tersane Bay, you can find the ruins of an interesting Byzantine church with excellent frescos. Swimming is allowed in that place, which is also an ideal spot for a relaxing picnic.
Kekova does not have any places for tourists to stay, but you will find good accommodation in the continent opposite the island.
You must visit Kale village with its lovely seafood restaurants, and the submerged tombs of Lycia in the ancient Simena, where you can also swim and have a picnic on the beach.
In Simena there is an old amphitheatre which is famous because it can only hold 400 people.
Trade with Greeks once made this port rich enough to be a target for pirates and today you can travel by kayak to see the remains of former forts and walls and enjoy with friends or family the beauty of this wonderful destination.
To get to Kekova you need to travel by boat from Kas or Kalkan. The best time to visit this paradise is between April and November.
