  • JOSE IGNACIO - URUGUAYJosé Ignacio is a small peninsula about forty miles from Punta del Este, at kilometer 182, Route 10, on the Eugenio Martinez Sainz Route, Department of Maldonado in Uruguay.

    This heavenly place on the Uruguayan Atlantic coast, is about two miles long by half mile wide and is located between Laguna Garzon and Laguna Jose Ignacio with two amazing and different beaches. On the west side we have the Mansa beach (Calm beach) and the other side of the peninsula is the Playa Brava (Rough beach). As their names indicate, the first one has magical and peaceful sunsets with fishermen boats, and the Brava is broad and has great waves.

    Jose Ignacio features a natural environment along the Atlantic Ocean that is elected by all those tourists who enjoy peace in the day, and quiet at night. Indeed, José Ignacio has the well deserved status of being one of the quietest beaches in Uruguay.

    WHERE TO STAY AND WHAT TO DO - HOTELS AND ACTIVITIES

    In its surroundings there is a farm area containing a luxurious summer infrastructure and hotels that have excellent services, so you will have no problem at all to find the accomodation that fix you.

    José Ignacio is now considered one of the best beaches for fishing and sailboating and has become a major tourist attraction, being increasingly crowded. From all over the world people come to visit people last relic of Punta del Este.

    Both the Laguna Jose Ignacio and Laguna Garzon are excellent for water sports like sailing, windsurfing or canoeing, motor boats are forbidden for wildlife conservation. Both lakes are brackish water because they are connected to the sea.

    At the top of the beach is the lighthouse, built in 1877 and subsequently restored, with its stunning looks attract the stares of tourists with its excellent preservation. One of the preferred rides is to climb to the lighthouse, because at its 30 meters high we can enjoy the wonderful panorama of Jose Ignacio.

    Favorite places to visit are: the square, the residential area, the amphitheater, the Parish of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the Mansa and Brava beaches, the promenade of the artisans, Jose Ignacio Lagoon and Laguna Garzon. A circuit with more than 20 gourmet restaurants, catholic chapel, art galleries, crafts, clothing boutiques and a playground in the main square. A big draw is the cuisine that offers not only the best seafood but invites to a variety of national and international dishes.

    HOW AND WHEN TO GO - WEATHER AND TRANSPORTATION

    You can arrive by air through the Carrasco International Airport in Montevideo and the Punta del Este Airport.Or by sea across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires and by land from Montevideo, taking the road through interbalnearia to Punta del Este, then the road Eugenio Martinez Sainz Route 10 to kilometer 182. Access routes have been developed with the advancement of tourism but still the excellent beaches, major residences and the excellent cuisine make it a unique center of attraction.

    The climate in Jose Ignacio is temperate subtropical, with summer temperatures (December to March) ranging from 21ºC to 32°C, while in the wintertime (June-September) ranges from 6ºC to 18ºC.
