Named as "the Butterfly" because of the shape of its two main islands, Guadalupe is a small archipelago with huge geografical contrasts. The islands Marie-Galante, La Desirade and Les Saintes are not developed but you can appreciate the remains of a once rich economy based on sugar cane plantations.

The beaches in Guadalupe are splendid and there are also quiet bays which are valued for their privacy and nearness to beautiful coral reefs which became well known thanks to the work of Cousteau. They are among the best beaches in the world.

Grande Terre is the east wing of the "butterfly", offering a flat landscape, with the exception of the cliff in Saint Francois, which, in the distance, appears to be a group of rocky castles, and where you can find the only nude beach in Guadalupe.

Where to stay and what to do

There is a well developed hotel infrastructure in Guadalupe, so it is not difficult to find the right accommodation to suit the international tourist.

If you are a trekking lover, you cannot miss the expedition through the jungle as far as Cascade Des Ecrevisses waterfall. And this is not the only one, as you can also find the Chutes du Carbet waterfalls which claim to be the highest in the Caribbean. And of course, Guadalupe is also a paradise for diving and snorkelling , which you can practise at the Jacques Cousteau Marine Reserve.

At night, Guadalupe comes alive in the countless bars and pubs, where you will be able to enjoy the salsa, merengue and other typical local dances in a lively and safe atmosphere.

Another activity you cannot miss is visiting Porte d´ Enfer, which offers extraordinary views of the sea among the coral reefs of Anse Bertrand, framed by rocky cliffs that erupt like geysers.

When and how to go

You can get a direct connection from Paris or Miami to Pointe a Pitre, and there are also direct flights from Saint John, Martinica or Barbados.

Visit Guadalupe any time of year, as the weather is always warm.
