Just 40 kms southeast of the capital of Bahamas, Nassau, you find Beacon Cay, the first of 365 cays belonging to the Exuma Chain. There is a total of about 3600 inhabitants, mainly fishermen who live in the cays, many of which are only reef barriers, whereas others offer leafy tropical vegetation, caves and grottos to explore and some of the best Caribbean beaches.

Due to the profuse sea life and the great visibility, the cays are extremely popular with divers. A vast area is protected inside the Overland Marine Park of Exumas, the first marine park in the world.

Where to stay and what to do

Allen Cay is one of the few places in the World where you can still appreciate iguana specimens. Another place you cannot miss is the fabulous Thundercall Cave.

The biggest settlement in the cays chain is George Town, named after George III. In 1835, an aristocrat called John Rolle passed away and gave his vast lands to his slaves, and that is the reason why there are many settlements with names beginning with "Rolle", among which we strongly recommend Rolleville and Rolletown.

The famous "Family Island Regatta" is celebrated every year, gathering teams from all over the world, so if you are a fan of this kind of events, this is a good opportunity to enjoy them.

When and how to go

You can get there by plane from Fort Lauderdale or Nassau, or by ferry from Nassau to Georgetown.

The ideal season to visit the cays is from December to May.
