Coiba is just 50 km off the Panamanian coast in Veraguas province and almost the 80% of the island is virgin tropical jungle, where you can find monkeys, amphibians, reptiles and very rare birds. From 1919 to 2004, it was a prison and tourists did not visit it. Even today, it is not easy to reach because the ecosystem on the island is protected.

The island houses a National Park that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005, due to the enormous concentration of fabulous marine species that make this place ideal for diving.

The spectacular coral beach known as Granito de Oro, is probably the best cove among the best beaches in Panama.

Where to stay and what to do

In Coiba we find good places to stay, although you must book in advance because access to the island is limited.

Visiting Barco Quebrado is a delight for those who love exotic bird species among which there is the scarlet macaw.

Diving in Damas Bay in the east of Coiba is meeting the largest coral reef in Central America, a great feast for divers.

If you want to see the extravagant monkeys that live on the island, you can take the "Path of the Monkeys" where you will be able to enjoy a spectacular trekking while you observe these strange creatures.

When and how to go

You can only get there by a charter flight from Panama City . Or you can travel by boat from Santa Carolina.

The dry season is from January to April, when it is the best time to visit the island.
