Half an hour distant from Maracay, we findone of the most emblematic towns en Venezuela; Choroni. As it is surrounded by spectacular cloudy forests,it is a very interesting destination for those who love quiet and relaxing holidays.
Besides sun and beach, this town has the special characteristic of making us feel transported to the colonial age, since its buildings keep their original fronts since 1600, which really invites us to go around if we decide to stop enjoying the beaches.
"Playa Grande", a fabulous shore one kilometer wide, bathed by the Caribbean Sea, full of coconut plants and limited by natural mountain effects which go down right into the sea, is known to be among the best beaches in Venezuela. The friendliness of its people, who work in fishing and growing of cacao, make us feel sure of having a very agreeable stay, since they personally take charge of helping tourists in everything they need.
WHERE TO STAY AND WHAT TO DO - HOTELS AND ACTIVITIES
We find a lot of inns, most of them set in a colonial style, with all the comfort and services to satisfy the customers. Food cooked there is a real demonstration of very good taste in a familiar atmosphere.
To arrive to this "jewel" of ancient times, it is necessary to go across the National Park Henry Pittier, the first national park in Venezuela which has more than one hundred thousand hectares, where there is the greatest variety of birds in the world with 560 different species, some of themin danger of extinction.
If we look for quiet beaches we must visit "Uriaco" o "Cepe", since all the other beaches are usually crowded with surfers at weekends.
In June, we have the picturesque festivity of Saint John the Baptist. The local inhabitants attract visitors with their typical dances at the sound of drums till high hours in dawn.
