URUGUAY BEACHES
Cabo Polonio is a special place, a picturesque village with incredible beaches of fine white sand dunes and the great lighthouse, which provides the last aesthetic touch of beauty. Located in the department of Rocha on the Atlantic Ocean off its coast stand out three small islands called La Rasa, La Encantada and El Islote, the large white sand dunes that are crossed to reach it are world famous and place Cabo Polonio among the most original and best beaches in Uruguay.
At sea you can see various rock formations that are home to sea lions, the native inhabitants of this wonderful place, which can be found quietly sunbathing or fighting the currents, and is common to hear their cries and songs while enjoying the beach. Local fishermen are the experts to approach the islets and to see them up close.
WHERE TO STAY AND WHAT TO DO - HOTELS AND ACTIVITIES
The majority of tourists, given the nature of the place, rent homes or cabins with varying degrees of comfort depending on needs and budget.
One of the most desirable activities is the sighting of sea lions that are in the islands near the coast. If you are lucky, you will see them fighting, screaming, playing or even dancing...but truth is that most of the time they are sleeping.
Another attraction of the place are the number of shipwrecks on which countless legends are woven, and may be seen from the shore.
The nightlife agrees with the bohemian style of the place, and there are many cabins ready to welcome visitors with good drinks, food and good music so dancing with friends is fun.
HOW AND WHEN TO GO - WEATHER AND TRANSPORTATION
From anywhere in the world you can connect to the Carrasco International Airport and then take Route Interbalnearia up Route 10 at Kilometer 264, by car or using the bus services available to the airport. By kilometer 264, after about a 3 hour drive, there is a special service with vehicles crossing sand that take you to Cabo Polonio. It's a journey of less than an hour through forest and beach.
The summer months of December to March are ideal, since the average temperature is 25 degrees. In other seasons the shuttle service to there is non-existent because the cold makes it impossible to enjoy the beaches.
