The Azores are a group of nine islands in the Atlantic Ocean, about 1500 kilometres from Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Some of them are big, for example Sao Miguel island with a surface of 760 square kilometers. Others are very small, like Corvo island which has a surface of only 17 square kilometers. All the archipelago occupies more than 2300 square kilometres.
On the Azores you can find lush vegetation including for example the beautiful hydrangeas, craters of extinct volcanoes, dolphins and whales, making up an amazing landscape for every visitor to delight in.

There is a wide range of different beaches with white, golden or black sand, waves, wind, calm waters. You can find urban or wild beaches, and there are also nudist beaches if you feel like it. The beaches on Sao Miguel island, called Corpo Santo are really attractive and some of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal.
If you have enough time and money, you can also get there on a cruiser, and in this case, the voyage is part of the whole fascinating experience. Several companies offer these cruisers departing from Lisbon.
There are hundreds of activities to choose from, you can lie in the sun or take baths with your family if you visit a calm water beach, or practise surfing, kite surfing, windsurfing or diving if you prefer to choose a beach with wind and waves.
The climate is pleasantly mild, subtropical and humid. The Azores have all kinds of beaches due to the gulf currents and the sunshine, the temperature is pleasant all the year, with higher temperatures in summer, and the water temperature is between 16º and 25º. The archipelago has nine airports and each island connects with the others. Some islands connect with Lisbon directly, which is very convenient.
