Akumal is bathed by the Caribbean Sea in the Yucatan penninsula, and due to its great natural beauty, it receives loads of tourists every year. From May to November is turtle´s nesting season in the Caribbean. In Akumal there is a spot where thousands of turtles meet to lay their eggs. One main attraction is a night walk to watch them. The name Akumal comes from the Mayan language and means “turtles´ place”.

On the bay there is a quiet beach with crystal water and golden sand, and a reef, all surrounded by beautiful palm trees which make it one of the best beaches in Mexico. You can come to spend the day or stay longer.

The most popular sports in Akumal are swimming, snorkeling and diving, the latter being extremely attractive as there are millions of marine species living in the sea. Ecotourism is a good choice. There are caves with fresh water and underground rivers. Very near, about 4 kilometres far, you can find amazing caves in Aktun Chen park.

Do not miss visiting the Mayan shrine in the Xaac creek, which was built of rock, or the museum founded by the Akumal ecologic Centre.

Weather & Flights

Cancun has a good airport 90-minute drive from Akumal. It is 37 km from Carmen beach and flying from Mexico city to Cancun takes just about two hours. The highest temperatures are between May and August, when they rise to 35º, and the annual average temperature is 25ºC.
